The Philippine Racing Commission (Philracom) "unanimously decided to support" the staging of the 3rd Press Photographers of the Philippines Cup, a charity race for the benefit of the groups' members.

PPP, founded in 1951, counts among its members press photographers from various print and online publications.

The proceeds of the race, which could go as high as P120,000, depending on the total of pari-mutuel sales for the event, will augment the PPP's fund for medical and burial assistance, workshops and seminars, and other services for its members.

The 3rd PPP Cup will be held on May 17, Sunday, at San Lazaro Leisure Park, the same day and venue as the first leg of the Philracom Triple Crown series.

The race series features elite 3YO Thoroughbreds and is among the most prestigious races on the calendar.

According to Philracom Chairman Andrew A. Sanchez, the agency is sponsoring a photo contest open to PPP members.

Only photos that have been published the week following each Triple Crown race will be eligible for the contest. There will be a competition for each leg of the race series.

The prizes for each of the contest's three legs are: 1st Place: P20,000 plus P5,000 to the publication's section editor; 2nd Place: P15,000 plus P3,000 to the section editor; 3rd Place: P10,000 plus P2,000 to the section editor.

Contest rules and eligibilities are available from Philracom (philracom.gov.ph).

PPP President Jun Mendoza thanked the Philracom Board for their support via the PPP race and contest. He added that the latter will encourage photographers to cover the sport of horseracing and trigger the interest of sports fans. ***
